later, that same day...

So…. after High Mass, we had a cappuccino at a sidewalk café in the Castle grounds, then wandered over to the Hungarian National Gallery – more art – some old, some newer – taking photographs required an additional charge, so I had to “pirate” the few that I took. The gallery had a guard in every room (as did the galleries in Vienna), but these were almost all grey-haired women. One kindly told us to go to the dome – which was not mentioned in the guidebooks or at the ticket sales. A relatively short climb took us to the top of the dome where we could look down, inside, on a 3 level installation of people falling, or go outside and have a fantastic 360ํํ degree view of Buda and Pest. A quick bite in the gallery cafeteria, then we walked down the hill to the Chain Bridge across the Danube. Lots more photo-ops of the city, and, as we got the the other end of the bridge, a stream of cyclists began to cross the bridge – thousands and thousands of them – we watched them pass us non-stop for half an hour (really!) and the crowd did not end – we think it may have been an Earth Day celebration.

Finally made it to the neighbourhood pub, for a couple of beers. Then out to look for dinner – but on a Sunday night at 7pm, there is not a lot of choice – bad pizza and cold Turkish food – not a memorable meal.
